Privacy Policy

Sophist AI is a study service operated by Shounak Ghosh in India (“Sophist”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). This policy applies when you use sophistai.app, create an account, contact us, or use the Sophist AI study workspace.

We collect the following categories of information:

• Account information: your name, email address, profile image, account identifiers, and authentication records when you sign in with Google.
• Study content: syllabi you paste or upload, file details, generated topic trees and articles, custom generation instructions, chats, and study progress.
• Subscription information: your subscription status, product and customer identifiers, and limited transaction details received from Dodo Payments. Sophist does not receive or store your complete payment-card details.
• Communications: messages and information you send when you contact us for support, privacy requests, or refunds.
• Technical and security information: information such as IP address, browser or device details, authentication events, request metadata, and error or security logs that Sophist and its service providers process to deliver and protect the service.

Please avoid placing sensitive personal information in a syllabus, prompt, or chat unless it is genuinely needed for your study task.

We use personal data to:

• create and secure your account;
• turn your syllabus into a topic tree, generate study material, and provide contextual chat;
• save your content, history, preferences, and progress;
• manage subscriptions, access, receipts, and refund requests;
• maintain reliability, prevent fraud or abuse, troubleshoot errors, and enforce our Terms;
• respond to support and privacy requests; and
• comply with legal obligations and protect legal rights.

Depending on the law that applies, we process this data to perform our agreement with you, with your consent, for legitimate interests such as security and service reliability, and to meet legal obligations.

Sophist does not currently use advertising cookies or behavioural analytics, and we do not sell your personal data. If we later add an analytics service such as PostHog, we will update this policy and provide any notice or choice required by law before using it.

Sophist sends the content needed for a generation or chat request to OpenRouter, which routes it to a downstream AI model provider. This can include your syllabus, prompts, relevant study content, and the model’s response. The provider used can vary by feature and availability.

Sophist does not use your syllabi, generated articles, or chats to train AI models. We use OpenRouter data controls intended to exclude AI providers that train on this content. Providers may still process and retain limited data for service delivery, safety, abuse prevention, or legal compliance under their applicable terms and configured data controls. You can review OpenRouter’s privacy policy and provider data guidance.

AI output can be inaccurate or incomplete. Do not include more personal data than necessary, and verify important information with reliable sources.

We share data only as needed to operate Sophist, complete a request, comply with law, or protect people and the service. Our main service providers are:

• Google for sign-in and account identity. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
• Convex for hosted authentication (using Better Auth software), application data, file storage, and backend operations. See the Convex Privacy Policy.
• OpenRouter and downstream model providers for AI generation, as explained above.
• Dodo Payments, our merchant of record, for checkout, tax, invoices, subscription administration, disputes, and refunds. Your purchase is also governed by Dodo’s buyer terms.

We may also disclose data when required by law or a valid legal process, to investigate fraud or security issues, to protect rights and safety, or as part of a merger, financing, acquisition, or sale of the service. If ownership changes, this policy will continue to apply until you are given notice of a replacement policy.

• Original files uploaded for syllabus extraction are automatically deleted after five days. Extracted syllabus text and study material created from the file remain in your account until you delete the related data or your account.
• Account data, syllabi, topic trees, articles, chats, and progress are retained while your account is active so the study workspace continues to function.
• Support, security, and transaction records are kept only as long as reasonably needed for those purposes or as required by law.

Deleting your Sophist account deletes the account and the Sophist app data associated with it. Some information can remain temporarily in restricted backups until those backups expire. Independent providers may retain records under their own policies, and Dodo Payments or Sophist may retain transaction, tax, fraud-prevention, dispute, or legal records where required or permitted by law. Account deletion does not automatically cancel or reverse a completed payment.

Sophist is intended for people aged 12 and older. If you are below the age at which you can consent to data processing or enter a contract where you live, a parent or legal guardian must review this policy and our Terms and provide any consent required by local law. If Indian law applies and you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian must review and agree to your use of Sophist.

A parent or guardian who believes a young person has used Sophist without required permission can contact hello@sophistai.app. We may ask for information needed to verify the request before restricting or deleting the account.

You can review and manage much of your account and study content in the service. You may also email us to ask to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of personal data we control, withdraw consent where processing depends on consent, or raise a concern.

Your rights depend on the law that applies to you and may be subject to identity verification and lawful exceptions. We will respond in accordance with applicable law. You may also have the right to complain to a relevant data-protection authority or seek another remedy available where you live.

We use reasonable technical and organisational measures intended to protect personal data. No online service can guarantee absolute security, so keep your Google account secure and contact us if you suspect unauthorised access.

Sophist and its providers may process information in India, the United States, and other countries where they operate. Those countries may have different data-protection laws. Where required, we rely on lawful transfer mechanisms and provider commitments appropriate to the transfer.

We may update this policy as Sophist or the law changes. We will post the revised policy with a new effective date and provide additional notice when a material change requires it. Changes apply from the stated effective date.
